This rope-out stage likely miles long slowly drags out as the supercell moves east. From the Grand River National Grassland in NW South Dakota... looking north from a desolate dirt road.

I had gotten in to my parents farm around midnight from Minnesota, and a persistent line of thunderstorms was training just to the west and north of the homestead on the Morgan/Weld County line in rural northeastern Colorado.  I had stayed up photographing some intermittent CG bolts from these storms on the road adjacent to the homestead, and was about to go to bed shortly before dawn when a tremendous flash filled the windows and a deafening crack of thunder shook the house. Checked my Radarscope and sure enough, a stout little thunderstorm had blown up over the farm. I decided to stay up and see what it would do, as I had the idea in the back of my mind that I might be able to obtain a shot that had always eluded me: a CG lightning bolt at sunrise.  I waited, I watched, I cowered from several CG bolts that struck slightly too close for comfort (and annoyingly out of frame, to my chagrin), and finally, just before the sun poked above the northeast horizon, the storm finally put down this fingerling beauty, perfectly in frame.  Had to recover some of the highlights and do some exposure adjustments, as I was shooting IS0 100 at f/22 on bulb for 15 seconds, but this is largely straight out of the camera. The beauty of shooting RAW.  A most excellent way to start off my visit home to my beautiful Colorado.  'A Striking Sunrise: 6:17 A.M.'  Farnik Homestead New Raymer, Colo.  07.11.2015

You know, when you think maybe the next strike might be too close?
