The green and reddish colored areas just above the crater are from airglow, basically elements, mostly nitrogen and oxygen, whose electrons having been ionized by the sun during the day now recombining with their host atoms. The green and the red are from oxygen atoms that are glowing. At first I thought it might be camera noise but then I could see that the light was actually reflected in the lake. Technical: This is a panorama of 21 merged images, 3 rows of 7 vertical images each. It is impossible to imagine the scale but with my wide angle lens I was only able to get the island (Wizard Island) in one frame. This was at 3 AM on a clear night last May just as the bright moon set. The moon was so bright that you could not see the milky way until the moon set. I then had about an hour before the sky would start to lighten and the milky way would disappear again. It took about 20 minutes to take all of the exposures. Each exposure was 30 seconds at f/2.8 and ISO 1600. The lowest row was at about 20 mm and the top two rows were at 16 mm. I used a Sony A7R with a Canon 16-35mm L II lens — at Crater Lake National Park.

This shot was taken as the storm had made it down to Bushton, KS right at sunset. A Oneok natural gas plant is dwarfed on the right side by the looming cell. The meso was exposed at just the right time as the lighting was perfectly illuminating the storm from the backside while bathing the base in a beautiful red glow. The constant rumble of an electrified storm growled overhead, and I just couldn't get some of the picturesque bolts that were dropping at a steady pace. This was a perfect way to wrap up a chase that began at Stockton. A tremendous thunderclap ensured very shortly afterwards. I figured we were awake after that. o.O

Spring on the West Coast Wilderness Railway, Tasmania. Our West Coast is totally different to our East. It's beautiful but in a very different way. Rugged windswept beaches, rocky mountains with both big forests in the valleys and sparse vegetation on top.
