Arctic air invades as 40 car pile up due to blinding snow causes 3 deaths in Indiana.
A pool of Arctic air stretched all the way to Houston Texas early Friday morning while blinding snow in Indiana caused a 40 car pile up resulting in 3 fatalities. While not unheard of but certainly not a regular event, temperatures in South East Texas this morning dipped below the freezing mark causing roads to ice up and school to be cancelled . The National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Warning for the Houston metro area from 5 p.m. Thursday through 9 a.m. this Friday morning.
Further North where temperatures have been below freezing for a good portion of 2014 the snowy weather pattern continued its grip bringing blowing lake effect snow to parts of the upper Midwest. A 40 car pile Thursday on a stretch of I-94 in Indiana has caused 3 fatalities and numerous injuries including one person in critical condition. Snow and whiteout conditions were contributing factors, state police said. Lake effect snow can cause white out conditions very quickly with one to two inches of snow falling per hour. Thankfully, temperatures for a good portion of the South and central plains will warm back to above freezing today but the Mid West and Northern states will remain in a snowy and cold pattern for the foreseeable future.
